Dave Clark Five
I pitched this story when I first heard the Dave Clark Five would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The DC5 were a forgotten band from the 1960s British Invasion.
I knew right away the piece would need archived sound. I could say it, but there’s nothing like having the listener hear it. I wanted listeners to hear the fans screaming and the band answering silly questions from the press. So, I contacted the BBC Archives and after a series of e-mails and phone calls I got what I needed. Thank you BBC Archives!!
I also knew the piece needed comment from a pop music critic or DJ. My intial thought was to speak with the BBC’s Brian Matthews. He hosts a program on the BBC called “Sounds of the 60s.” Brian Matthews was unavailable, but another classic British DJ was — Ed “Stewpot.” He’s a big fan of the DC5 and was so happy to hear they were being inducted.
One final note. I completed the script the day Mike Smith’s obituary was published in The New York Times.

It’s sad that Mike Smith (aka Leather Lungs) passed before the DC5 was inducted. I spent my early teen years (the 80s) looking all over for original vinyl that was long out of print (found very few).
